Instagram has rolled out a two pronged approach to assisting the vision impaired to interact with their content. The first step is using AI object recognition that will automatically add a description to items. The second is the ability for users to add their own alt text descriptions to photos. Alt text fields are read by screen readers describing the imagery of a photo and we use them on websites to help people with vision impairment to navigate the web.
